In this 5 day camp young chefs will take a culinary trip back in time to learn how early Saskatchewanians lived.

Each day will start with a brief lesson covering early food methods from pioneer preserving techniques to indigenous traditions. These lessons will be followed by a practical, hand-on cooking lesson and excursions into Saskatoon's natural abundance. Students will learn to create authentic and delicious dishes in a fun and supportive environment. The young chefs will embark on a walking field trip throughout the week and prepare and eat meals in the great outdoors. We will discuss issues around food sovereignty, living in harmony with Mother Nature, foraging, preserving and identifying native edible plants and animals.

Highlights:

  • Emphasizing the different roles food has in our lives (with ties into Medicine Wheel). Tell the stories behind the recipes and emphasize the importance of storytelling for passing down Indigenous traditions.

  • Understand and discover historic farming/food systems that were used (i.e., hunting, preservation, non-perishables, grains, etc.)

  • Explore communal spaces and discover places that provide local and fresh produce.

  • Appreciate and understand Indigenous culture and traditions.

  • Discuss seasonality of farming/agriculture/types of fruit and veg available.

  • Discuss medicines and how natural remedies were used by Indigenous peoples (herbs, weeds, etc.)
